ENHANCING ENGLISH FLUENCY THROUGH AI-POWERED CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH TUTORS: A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY : DIGITAL LITERACIES/LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY
This research investigates the effectiveness of AI-powered conversational English tutors in enhancing learners’ English-speaking fluency. AI (Artificial Intelligence) tutors, such as Praktika, provide interactive and personalized learning experiences tailored to individual learners’ needs, offering features such as conversational practice, personalized feedback, and real time corrections. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of the research questions. Quantitative data is collected through surveys and usage analytics to assess learners’ improvements in speaking fluency based on tests administered before and after engaging with AI tutors, satisfaction and perceived effectiveness of AI tutors. Qualitative data is gathered through interviews and focus group discussions to explore learners’ experiences, perceptions, and attitudes towards AI tutors. There are two groups (experimental and control) with the same language proficiency level that participate in an experiment. An experimental group engages with AI-powered conversational English tutors, utilizing features such as personalized feedback, interactive exercises, and real-time practice while a control group follows traditional language learning methods, such as textbook-based instruction, classroom activities, or self-study without AI tutors. Overall, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge in the field of language education and educational technology by providing empirical evidence of the effectiveness of AI-powered conversational English tutors in improving learners' English fluency.
