MEDIA MANIPULATION IN LANGUAGE EDUCATION: A STUDY ON SOUTH ASIAN CONTEXT : GLOBAL ISSUES IN LANGUAGE EDUCATION
Foreign Language Learning uses media as the most authentic source of learning material. With the progress of technology, teachers find themselves delving into the land of Western press as well as the digital platforms for bringing new insights into the TESOL classrooms of South Asian countries such as Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. However, the intense censoring and manipulation of the media language in these sources has raised repetitive criticism against its control over the public perception of global political issues. This paper aims to investigate the influence of Western media such as the Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian as well as Facebook and X.com as the representatives of digital media, in shaping the political ideologies of South Asian language learners. Additionally, it addresses the possible solutions to mitigate various propagandist ideologies circulated by the media, in foreign language classrooms.
