A DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ON SHAYKH NAWAWI AL-BANTANI’S ‘TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP’ SKILLS TO SUPPORT UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONALIZATION AGENDA : LINGUISTICS, DISCOURSE ANALYSIS, AND RELATED AREAS

As the largest public university in Banten province of Indonesia, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University actively develops a comprehensive internationalization agenda indicated by the production of more global media promotion in English as a Healthy, Smart and Green (HITS) campus. This paper aims to report a small part of a study concerned the analysis of leadership skills of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani,‘ a man of knowledge’ born and raised in Banten in the 19th century that is recognized as an international intellectual. Informed by transformative leadership theory as a framework, this research employed a discourse analysis approach. Data in this study were collected through textual analysis by examining written texts that record the Shaykh’s life stories (e.g., books, articles, social media posts) and semi-structured interviews with relatives of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani and university academics whose works focus on gaining an in-depth understanding of the Shaykh’s life values and beliefs. Results of this study have indicated Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani as, among others, a change agent, a life-long learner, an effective communicator, a cooperative and strategic figure. All these findings are invaluable sources and references in the creation of more university media promotion in English to support Untirta’s strategic attempts to contribute globally through its international collaboration especially with foreign universities and companies.
