ETHNIC MINORITY STUDENT PERSPECTIVES IN VIETNAM: THE IMPACT OF INTERNATIONALIZATION ON EDUCATION : LANGUAGE PLANNING AND LANGUAGE POLICY

The higher education landscape in Vietnam is experiencing significant shifts with the growing integration of English-Medium Instruction (EMI) courses, aligning with the internationalization efforts of higher education institutions (HEIs). Amidst this transition, it is crucial to examine the impact of these changes on ethnic minority students and address systemic barriers to ensure their equitable access to quality education. This study aims to shed light on the perspectives and experiences of ethnic minority students within Vietnamese HEIs, serving as a case study to understand their viewpoints regarding the introduction of EMI courses and the abolishment of specialized curricula tailored for minority students. Through in-depth interviews conducted with 12 students representing diverse ethnic backgrounds across four HEIs in Vietnam, this research delves into the intricate nuances of ethnic minority students' perspectives. Factors such as language proficiency, availability of academic support, and inclusivity in educational practices are meticulously examined to offer valuable insights into the efficacy and fairness of existing educational policies and approaches. Ultimately, this study contributes to the ongoing discourse on educational equity and social justice in Vietnam's higher education system, highlighting the importance of responsive and culturally sensitive approaches to accommodate the diverse needs and experiences of ethnic minority students in the era of internationalization.
