ANALYSIS OF MOTHER-DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIPS IN “TURNING RED” FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF VIOLATIONS OF THE COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLE : LINGUISTICS, DISCOURSE ANALYSIS, AND RELATED AREAS

The film “Turning Red” has sparked extensive discussions due to its in-depth exploration of topics such as female adolescence and mother-daughter relationships. This study is grounded in pragmatics and utilizes Grice’s Cooperative Principle as its theoretical framework. By analyzing the linguistic phenomena in the mother-daughter dialogues in the film, it delves into how violations of the Cooperative Principle reflect the relationship between the two parties. The analysis reveals a pattern of “control and compliance” between the mother and daughter in the film, leading to latent conflicts and tensions. This study also indicates the feasibility and practicality of the Cooperative Principle in the analysis of actual linguistic data.
