OER MATERIALS DESIGN: A PLATFORM FOR EXPOSITORY ESSAY WRITING : MATERIALS DESIGN

This paper presents the materials design of a platform for expository essay writing within the scope of open educational resources (OER). It mainly aims to match the materials design with the criteria of open educational resources (OER) which include content quality, accessibility and usability, educational value, originality and creativity, potential impact and presentation. Padlet has been used as a digital tool for this expository essay writing platform OER. The expository essay writing platform has revealed that the OER materials have relevance, accuracy and depth for its content quality criteria. In terms of its accessibility and usability criteria, the OER materials has an open license label, various formats with universal design principles. With regard to the educational value criteria, the OER materials have well-defined learning outcomes along with pedagogical design and align with educational standards. The OER materials also demonstrate uniqueness with creative presentation for its originality and creativity criteria. In terms of its potential impact criteria, the OER materials provide scalability, adaptability, effectiveness and engagement. Lastly, the presentation criteria show developer’s understanding of OER principles, knowledge of open licenses, a well-structured content and clear idea of the topic. It is hoped that this expository essay writing platform will be a useful OER for both lecturers and students in the teaching and learning of expository essay writing in higher education institutions.

Associate Professor Dr Norwati Roslim is a lecturer at the Academy of Language Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Cawangan Negeri Sembilan, Kampus Rembau, Malaysia. She holds a Ph. D in TESL from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Her research interest includes Teaching English as a Second Language and Corpus Linguistics.

Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Hakimi Tew Abdullah is a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Cawangan Negeri Sembilan, Kampus Rembau, Malaysia.

Siti ‘Aishatul-Humairah Muhammad Fisol is a lecturer at the Academy of Language Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Cawangan Negeri Sembilan, Kampus Rembau, Malaysia. Her research interests are materials design and AI in English language teaching.

Suhaila Shahril is a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Cawangan Negeri Sembilan, Kampus Rembau, Malaysia.

Alyssa completed her MA in TESOL Pre-Service at University College London in 2023. She did her B.Ed TESL at Universiti Putra Malaysia and is currently working as a part-time TESL lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia. Alyssa is interested in teaching materials for language development and pedagogies (speaking, listening and literature).
