NAVIGATING BUSINESS DISCOURSE THROUGH DIFFERENT SPECCH ACTS : WORLD ENGLISHES/ENGLISH AS A LINGUA FRANCA

In the complex landscape of business communication, the strategic use of speech acts plays a crucial role in negotiating meanings and achieving communicative goals. This paper explores the dynamics of business discourse through the lens of various speech acts—such as requests, promises, apologies, and directives—across different cultural and organizational contexts. Drawing on a corpus of authentic business interactions and employing a pragmatic analysis framework, we examine how speech acts are performed and interpreted within professional settings. The study highlights the nuances of politeness strategies, the role of indirectness and power dynamics, and how these elements influence the efficacy of business interactions. Our findings suggest that a deeper understanding of speech act theory can enhance communicative competence in business environments, leading to more effective and culturally sensitive communication strategies. By integrating theoretical insights with practical examples, this paper aims to provide valuable guidelines for professionals navigating the complexities of business discourse. This research not only contributes to academic discussions on pragmatics and discourse analysis but also offers actionable insights for practitioners seeking to refine their communication skills in diverse business landscapes.
