EXPLORING LEARNING STRATEGIES IN THE CHATGPT ERA: A CASE STUDY ON EFL LEARNERS IN CHINA : SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND LITERACY DEVELOPMENT

In the era of AI technology, especially with the wide application of tools such as ChatGPT, the learning strategies of college English learners have attracted more and more attention. This research takes an EFL learner in China as the study subject using a case study approach to examine EFL learners' learning strategies in ChatGPT era, including memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies and social strategies. It is guided by two research questions: (1)How are learning strategies used in ChatGPT era? (2) What are the changes of learning strategies from traditional ones? The study found out that compared with the traditional background, English learners' strategies have changed in ChatGPT era. Various learning strategies are frequently used, especially the compensation strategy, which is the most frequently used. Intelligent memory tools, personalized cognitive training and translation tools are more used,while the frequency of social strategies is low. Learning strategies in the ChatGPT era are significantly correlated with autonomy. Learning strategies can enhance EFL learners' learning experience and motivation, as well as their autonomy and participation. Based on the above findings, this research provides suggestions for EFL learners, educators and technology developers, aiming at promoting English education and technology application further.
