GAMIFICATION IN ENGLISH LEARNING FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS : METHODOLOGIES AND TEACHING APPROACHES
In the multilingual setting like Indonesia, learning English as a foreign language can be tricky, especially in university level in non-English department. Provided with limited time allocation in learning English, students are expected to be able to master the public speaking as well as their subject of study. What brings a bigger challenge in students’ English mastery is that their mastery is not of the same standard. Students from big cities usually have better mastery than students coming from rural areas. Some students have good grades in their senior high school, but they are not used to speaking the language. It is quite common to see how some students dominate the class activities while many more are used to be quiet and ended up at being passive audiences in class. Responding to this situation, an innovative teaching method combining different approaches is needed to help students master not only the language but also the public speaking skills. This study shows how gamification can help lecturers develop an effective method to develop their students English mastery in presenting specific topics to public. By using gamification in the English class, students are encouraged to actively speak up in public, gradually grow their confidence, develop their critical thinking and their public speaking skills.
