THE ROLE OF TEACHERS’ AND CLASSMATES’ REINFORCEMENT TO STUDENTS’ ONLINE SPEAKING PRACTICES IN INDONESIA : GLOBAL ISSUES IN LANGUAGE EDUCATION

This current research is carried out to investigate how social reinforcements influence students' learning motivation and learning strategies during online learning in rural areas in Central Java. Coping with the current education mode, we assume that social reinforcement from the people involved in the learning environment will have a positive influence on the students' speaking practices. This research aims to study the role of teachers’ and classmates’ reinforcement of students’ learning strategies and motivation during collaborative speaking practices. Questionnaires and interviews are used to obtain the data. The subjects of the research are second-semester English students in one public university in a rural area in Central Java. The result shows that the teachers’ and classmates’ reinforcements influence students’ self-confidence in English speaking. They appreciate teachers’ reinforcement because they need assurance for better speaking performance and enjoy reciprocal encouragement from classmates as learning partners.
