EFL TEACHERS’ TPACK AFTER THE PANDEMIC: A CASE OF MUHAMMADIYAH ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOLS IN INDONESIA : DIGITAL LITERACIES/LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY

The widespread promotion of technology integration during the pandemic led to changes in the way EFL teachers in Indonesian Islamic boarding schools experienced it. This mixed-method research aims to evaluate EFL teachers’ TPACK after the pandemic and how the pandemic developed them. The participants were 57 EFL teachers of Muhammadiyah Islamic boarding schools in Lamongan, Indonesia. For the quantitative stage, an online survey containing 39 items with a four-point Likert scale was employed to evaluate EFL teachers about their experiences of TPACK development after the outbreak. In the qualitative stage, a one-on-one structured interview was conducted. The quantitative data were analyzed statistically while the qualitative data were analyzed by applying a five-step qualitative data analysis. The quantitative findings indicated that the teachers had a moderate to high level of all dimensions of TPACK, and they rated their technological knowledge dimensions relatively higher than non-technological-related knowledge dimensions. Interestingly, multiple teachers within the same school tended to have equally high or equally low TPACK competencies regardless of their gender, age, and teaching experience. The qualitative results demonstrated that each Muhammadiyah Islamic boarding school responded to the pandemic differently, thus leading to unequal TPACK competencies among the teachers. The results also revealed that the pandemic has directly forced teachers to step out of their comfort zone of traditional methods of teaching into more engaging learning with technology integration.
