THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A WEB-BASED GRAMMATICAL COMPETENCE MODULE (MODUGRAM) FOR PRE-UNIVERSITY ESL STUDENTS : ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC/SPECIFIC PURPOSES
Higher education is pivotal in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, emphasizing the importance of universal access to quality tertiary education. However, many ESL learners in Malaysia struggle with English grammar competency, deterring their academic success and communication skills. They face significant challenges in grasping English grammar, impacting their academic performance and language proficiency. Transitioning from secondary to tertiary education also exacerbates these challenges, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to enhance grammar competency. This proposal aims to address these challenges by developing a web-based English grammar competence module called MODUGRAM, tailored for pre-university ESL students in Malaysia. The study seeks to develop a comprehensive web-based grammar module that will address ESL learners’ needs and issues in grammar learning. The study will employ Design and Development Research, which includes conducting three phases; Needs analysis, designing and developing the web-based module, and implementing and evaluating the module’s effectiveness in improving grammar competency and student acceptance. This study is hoped to fill gaps in the existing literature by providing a targeted solution to enhance grammar proficiency among pre-university ESL students in Malaysia. The module's development aligns with Malaysia's educational goals and aims to bridge the knowledge gap in English grammar teaching and learning. By developing this web-based English grammar competence module, this study seeks to empower pre-university ESL students in Malaysia with essential grammar competency, supporting their academic journey and contributing to Malaysia's vision of educational excellence and global competitiveness.
