DEVELOPING A MODEL OF TEACHING SPEAKING SKILLS FOR THE ENGLISH CAMP PROGRAM OF STATE INSTITUTE FOR ISLAMIC STUDIES IN SHOUT SULAWESI, INDONESIA : METHODOLOGIES AND TEACHING APPROACHES
In the context of Islamic studies, teaching speaking skills to non-native English speakers presents unique challenges and opportunities. This study aims to develop a comprehensive model for teaching English speaking skills specifically tailored to an English camp program and to examine the students' perception of the English Camp program at the State Institute for Islamic Studies. The model is designed to enhance student engagement, foster practical communication skills, and align with the cultural and religious values of the institution. In developing the model, Research and Development was used by utilizing the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model design. The research subjects were 100 students who took part in the English Camp Program, 5 teachers, and 10 peer tutors who facilitated the sessions. The development model was validated by experts and practitioners through Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Questionnaires and interviews for teachers, peer tutors, and students were conducted to determine their perceptions of the implementation of the speaking teaching model. The model produced in this research is named Classroom Grouping Teaching Speaking Skills Model (CGTSM). The model integrates a variety of interactive teaching strategies, such as group discussions, debates, and role-playing, to encourage active student participation and collaborative learning. Additionally, it incorporates content that aligns with Islamic values and themes, ensuring relevance to the students' academic and religious backgrounds. The model includes structured assessments to monitor progress and make adjustments to meet the evolving needs of the learners. Through the implementation of this model, the English camp program achieved significant improvements in student engagement and speaking proficiency. This model serves as a guide for State Institutes for Islamic Studies seeking to create English-speaking programs that effectively combine language learning with cultural sensitivity and religious respect
