INSIGHTS FROM THE INITIAL IMPLEMENTATION OF X-READING : SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND LITERACY DEVELOPMENT

This study investigates the implementation of Extensive Reading (ER), a well-established method for second language acquisition, within a university language program in southern Japan. ER involves reading a substantial amount of texts suited to each learner's level. Many language institutions have adopted ER in recent years. This research focuses on X-Reading (www.xreading.com), an online ER library newly integrated into the university's program. Surveys were conducted before and after students used X-Reading to gauge its impact on their comprehension, attitudes, and interest in ER. Additionally, a controlled trial was carried out to assess the effects X-Reading had on students' reading speed, accuracy, and vocabulary acquisition. The study will delve into its learning context, research design, and initial findings, aiming to contribute to the English teaching community at AsiaTEFL. By doing so, it seeks to inspire other institutions to bolster their ER programs with online libraries such as X-Reading.
