ENHANCING IN-SERVICE ENGLISH TEACHERS' LESSON PLANNING SKILLS USING GENRE-BASED APPROACH FOR TEACHING FICTION READING : CURRICULUM AND SYLLABUS DESIGN
This study delves into the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and a genre-based approach to enhance in-service English teachers' ability to create effective lesson plans for teaching students to read fiction via story maps. The research focuses on the collaborative efforts of teachers and AI technology to design a pedagogically sound and engaging learning environment. The genre-based approach adds depth to instruction by emphasizing the structural and thematic elements of fiction. It serves as the foundational framework for structuring lesson plans, emphasizing the analysis of narrative elements, character development, plot sequencing, and thematic exploration within fiction texts. Story maps, as a visual representation tool, are employed to scaffold students' understanding of complex narratives, facilitating comprehension, critical thinking, and literary analysis skills. During the training, eight in-service teachers are guided through the genre-based approach to create personalized lesson plans for teaching fiction reading, while AI helps with text modification, interactive story mapping, and multimedia integration. The study employs a mixed-methods research design, combining qualitative analysis of teacher reflections and lesson plan evaluations. Pre- and post-training surveys assess teachers' confidence levels, pedagogical knowledge, and perceived effectiveness of AI-supported lesson planning. The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on the integration of AI in education, highlighting its potential to promote teacher creativity and instructional efficiency. Implications for professional development programs and curriculum design in English language teaching are discussed, emphasizing the value of the genre-based approach and technology-enhanced pedagogy in fostering literacy skills among students.
