A CASE STUDY : EMPLOYING TRANSLANGUAGING TECHNIQUES ON SELECTED BILINGUAL LEARNERS IN A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY IN SRI LANKA : PLURILINGUALISM AND TRANSLANGUAGING
This study aimed to investigate the effects of employing translanguaging strategies on tertiary level bilingual learners in a private university and to determine whether such strategies aid in their English language acquisition. Data collection involved observing four lessons of four classes of the same level, conducting three focus group discussions with both students and teachers and gathering feedback through questionnaires. The results revealed that the implementation of translanguaging indeed facilitated the advancement of students' English language skills. Moreover, the study noted that while teachers utilized various translanguaging techniques in their classrooms, not all felt fully confident about the positive outcomes associated with these strategies. The findings underscored the necessity for formal training for teachers in the effective utilization of translanguaging methods. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of providing support to educators to ensure their adept application of these strategies in accordance with existing language policies and programs. The study's implications suggest that investing in teachers' professional development in translanguaging practices could significantly benefit bilingual learners, ultimately enhancing their proficiency in English. Furthermore, aligning these strategies with established educational frameworks could contribute to a more cohesive and effective language learning environment. In summary, the study highlights the positive impact of translanguaging on bilingual learners' English language development while also emphasizing the crucial role of teacher training and support in maximizing the benefits of these strategies within the educational context.
