ENGLISH LITERATURE STUDENTS’ METAPRAGMATIC AWARENESS REPRESENTED IN STUDENTS-LECTURER INTERACTIONS : LINGUISTICS, DISCOURSE ANALYSIS, AND RELATED AREAS
Who utilizes a language has a lot to do with it. Understanding the context of language use is essential to being able to use language effectively and for the intended goal. This comprehension, which affects the use of particular language patterns, is known as metapragmatic awareness. It is crucial to conduct a study on language use among young people because of the significance of metapragmatic awareness and the paucity of previous studies on the subject in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to characterize the metapragmatic awareness that Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta English Literature students possess when engaging with their lecturers in both formal and casual settings. The goals of this study are to (1) recognize the metapragmatic awareness indicators that students express in their speech and (2) elucidate the purposes served by the students' stylistic choices. Discourse completion tasks (DCT) were distributed, and interviews were conducted, as methods of data collecting. Fifty Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta English literature students participated in the study; they were chosen through the use of a purposive random sampling. To get more information about the participants' understanding of metapragmatic awareness and to shed light on the DCT results that could require more research, ten of the participants were also interviewed. Both quantitative and qualitative data were used in the comprehensive study of the data. The study's findings were displayed using histograms and narrative interpretation.
