USING PEER FEEDBACK TO DEVELOP STUDENT FEEDBACK LITERACY IN L2 WRITING: INSIGHTS FROM THINK-ALOUD DATA : SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND LITERACY DEVELOPMENT

Recent years have witnessed a growing focus on researching student feedback literacy within the L2 writing context. This heightened interest is driven by the recognition that feedback literacy plays an important role in maximizing the effectiveness of feedback processes. However, how student feedback literacy can be developed in the context of L2 writing remain largely underdiscussed. This study seeks to address this gap by examining how peer feedback intervention facilitates the development of student feedback literacy in L2 writing. Across a 16-week intervention period, ten Chinese undergraduates engaged in three argumentative writing tasks, each followed by peer feedback sessions and think-aloud protocols. During these protocols, participants were informed to verbalize their thoughts when they gave and received feedback on their peers’ writing during peer feedback sessions. Their responses were audio-recorded, transcribed, and translated for thematic analysis. Findings revealed that through peer feedback, students developed an awareness of the reciprocal nature of peer feedback, recognizing the value of both providing and receiving feedback. Moreover, participants perceived an improvement in their student feedback literacy over the semester, attributing this growth to the opportunities to engage in reflective analysis of both their own and their peers’ writing products. This study offers insights for L2 writing teachers to design targeted pedagogical interventions aimed at nurturing student feedback literacy in the L2 writing context.
