DESIGNING ESL LESSONS FOCUSING ON EQUITY PRINCIPLES AND DIFFERENTIATING INSTRUCTIONS : MATERIALS DESIGN
About 80% of the population in Uzbekistan are Uzbeks, and more than 10% are representatives of Central Asian nations (Tajiks (4,5%), Kazakhs (2,5%), Karakalpaks (2%), Kirgizs (1%), Turkmens and others). Other largest ethnic groups include Russians and other Slavic nations (10%). All these people, including Uzbeks, have their way of migration and stories. All citizens of the Republic of Uzbekistan have equal rights and freedoms and be equal before the law without discrimination by sex, race, nationality, language, religion, social origin, convictions, and individual and social status. While teaching students who live at the intersections of many cultural practices and identities it is essential to develop their linguistic competence and, at the same time, to help them build their sociolinguistic competence, encouraging them to personalize the topic, to associate it with their experience and expertise in a safe, secure environment and using transformative education approaches, allowing them using counter-narratives, enabling them doing research. This proposal suggests to design a series of EFL classes with an emphasis on Equity, Social Justice and Diversity. It discusses how to effectively use linguistic materials( reading, writing), how to provide interaction between teacher-student and student-student by delivering safety, how to enable students apply their critical thinking skills, creative and constructive skills during the class, and most importantly, how students at the end of the unit will be able to personalize and apply the skills and knowledge they learn to real-life situations. The series include the stages such as Hearing and sharing personal narratives, Deepening our understanding of primary and secondary sources, Researching policies and creating a counter-narrative account, Taking an action/Producing.
