DEMOTIVATING FACTORS IN LEARNING ENGLISH WRITING: STUDENTS' PERSPECTIVES : METHODOLOGIES AND TEACHING APPROACHES

Less enthusiasm in writing English has become a worrying thing nowadays. Ironically, this also happens to EFL students at university level. The research aims to identify and analyze the demotivating factors that hinder students' progress in English writing classes. A number of 40 students participated in this study, and the data was collected using a questionnaire developed by Karaca and Inan (2019), and interview technique to enrich the data. The findings reveal that there are four major factors contributing to the students’ demotivation in learning writing at university namely students’ self perceived writing competence, teacher practices, writing materials and methods, and learning contexts or situation. The implications of this study highlight the importance of understanding these demotivating aspects to enhance students' English writing skills. Teachers need to create a more supportive environment for students in writing classes by developing ways of presenting material to make it easier to understand, provide clear guidance and constructive feedback in developing English writing skills.
