PROMOTING CLIL PEDAGOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN ABILITY OF THAI EFL PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS THROUGH SIOP-MODEL : TEACHER EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

This study aims to examine the effects of the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model on the pedagogical knowledge of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and the instructional design abilities of Thai EFL pre-service teachers, as well as their perceptions of the instruction. A mixed-methods approach with a quasi-experimental design was utilized. The sample consisted of 18 English major pre-service teachers from a university in Bangkok, Thailand. Data collection tools included a CLIL pedagogical knowledge test, an instructional design assessment form comprising lesson plans and materials design, a questionnaire, and an interview. Quantitative data were analyzed using a non-parametric statistical hypothesis test. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in the pre-service teachers’ CLIL pedagogical knowledge. Their ability to design CLIL lesson plans and materials was rated highly. Additionally, the pre-service teachers expressed positive perception about the SIOP model. The study concluded that the SIOP model could positively influence pre-service teachers, and it was recommended that the SIOP model be further developed and provided to pre-service teachers.
