ENHANCING ENGLISH ABSTRACT WRITING SKILLS: THE IMPACTS OF MOOC BLENDED WITH CLIL ON THAI GRADUATE STUDENTS : DIGITAL LITERACIES/LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY
Novice researchers face many challenges with English abstract writing, especially non-English major graduate students required to publish research articles. Despite these difficulties, these students often have little experience in writing abstracts. Based on formal rhetorical moves and linguistic features of the English abstract, and incorporating theories of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), this study presents a MOOC blended with a CLIL program designed to improve the English abstract writing skills of non-English major graduate students at a university in northeast Thailand. This quasi-experimental study employs both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data were gathered through writing tests and a questionnaire, while qualitative data were obtained via semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal the impacts of the MOOC blended with CLIL program on students' ability to successfully complete English abstract writing. Additionally, the study provides insights into the attitudes of the students and their project advisors towards the program. The implications of this research contribute to pedagogical advancements, promoting autonomous learning for novice researchers and enhancing the program’s accessibility.
