DEVELOPING AN ENGLISH MODEL ORIENTED TO LEFT AND RIGHT BRAINS ACCOMODATION IN VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL : CURRICULUM AND SYLLABUS DESIGN

Proponents of brain-based education argue that academic achievement can be enhanced when students are provided with learning experiences that are engaging for students with different brain modalities. Therefore, educators need to have knowledge of critical brain processes in order to be more effective in facilitating student achievement. The more we understand the brain, the better we can create instructions that best suit the way the brain learns. However, in reality, the learning taught in vocational schools is still not relevant to students' English needs. This is due to the inconsistency of English learning for vocational school students with their needs. In addition, the lack of effectiveness and innovation of English learning models that have not balanced the left and right brain in the vocational school education environment, thus creating less than optimal English learning. This research aims to develop an English model oriented to left and right brains accommodation in vocational high schools. The type of this research is Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE framework (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The data was collected through surveys and interviews with the teachers and students of vocational school students in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. The results indicate that most participants find the effective model in increasing student engagement and improving English proficiency that oriented to left and right brains accomodation. The research suggests that brain-compatible instruction, which accommodates different learning modalities, is crucial for preparing vocational students for the global workforce. The implications point toward the need for professional development in neuroscience-informed teaching to help educators integrate these strategies effectively.
